Earthquake on Haiti
Find out how you can help

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 hit off the coast of Haiti. There was serious damage caused such as a hospital collapsing, limited cell phone service and a major bridge collapsing. The organization of Food For the Poor has sent a team down to see what the people need to survive. As of now they are accepting canned meats, fish, condensed milk, evaporated and powder milk and water. Food For the Poor will be doing everything it can to reach out to the people of Haiti and will keep their website posted. Pop Smith Little League Registration

Citizen’s Police Academy Program
Every Thursday from now until to April 8th

The Cheshire Police Department is offering a 6-week police academy program whose goal is “to promote a better relationship between citizens and police through education.” This course will be held every Thursday starting March 4th and ending on April 8th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Cheshire Police Departments Training room. Donations for Haiti relief
Going on now through Sunday May 30th

The Sawyer School in Hamden is accepting donations for Haiti relief starting Tuesday March 2nd through Sunday May 30th. Donations such as cash, clothes and shoes will be collected. This is an ongoing event so feel free to stop by The Sawyer School in Hamden to drop off donations. This event is scheduled to run until the end of May, but help is needed immediately. Every little donation counts and is appreciated. The Sawyer School is located at 1125 Dixwell Avenue in Hamden.


St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound 14th Annual Celebrity Breakfast
Wednesday March 10th

St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound will hold its 14th Annual Celebrity Breakfast on Wednesday March 10th at 7:30 AM in the Ballroom of the Holiday Inn, located at 1070 Main Street in Bridgeport. The event will include a silent and live auction of sports memorabilia, breakfast and sports commentary. Hear Rick Cerone, former catcher with the New York Yankees, share his insider experiences with some of the most successful teams in the history of baseball. Each table sponsor will serve as a “celebrity waiter” for their friends and colleagues. In return, the waiters hope to earn a $100 tip from each of them that will also be donated to the SWIM. Table sponsorships at the Celebrity Breakfast are available for $500 and individual tickets are available for $100 each. Free and Low-cost Digital Mobile Mammography Screening in Milford
Thursday March 11th

The SWIM Women’s Imaging Center will offer free mammography screenings on Thursday March 11th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at St. Mary’s Church at 76 Gulf Street in Milford. Mammograms are free for those who do not have health insurance, have financial limitations and qualify for assistance. For those who do not have in insurance but do not qualify for free services, mammograms are discounted. The Whitney Players present "Godspell"

Head-Shaving Events to Raise Funds for Childhood Cancer Research
Monday March 15th

The St. Baldrick Foundation raises awareness and funds to fight childhood cancer. While battling cancer, children lose not only their hair but years of their childhood, and sometimes their lives. Participants in a St. Baldrick’s event shave their heads in exchange for donations towards research. It is simple concept, fun and very effective fundraiser. The head shaving will commence on Monday March 15th from 4:00 to 10:00 PM at Waterville Firehouse, located at 1551 Thomaston Avenue in Waterbury. The HIV/AIDS Ministry hosts its “Changing Behaviors, Saving Lives” on Saturday March 20th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Grace Baptist Church, 65 Kingsbury Street in Waterbury. This program will educate everyone about this deadly, yet preventable disease by discussing the facts about the virus, share testimonies from those living with the disease and offer hope. Youth Continuum, Homeless Youth Services Open House

Youth Continuum provides programs to youth ages 16-23 in need of housing, counseling, infant needs, academic support, employment, emergency shelter and other basic necessities. Programming is also available to pregnant and parenting youth. An Open House will be held on Wednesday March 24th from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the MacMullen Center, 924 Grand Avenue in New Haven. The City of New Haven Easter Egg Hunt
Saturday March 27th

The New Haven Department of Parks Recreation, along with 94.3 WYBC and the New Haven Firebirds, will sponsor the City of New Haven's Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the New Haven Green on Saturday March 27th starting at 10:00 AM. The rain date is Saturday April 3rd. Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny will arrive by a New Haven Fire Truck at around 10:00 AM. There will be separate areas for children up to the age of five and from six and up. There will be candy, music and prizes given away throughout the morning. 94.3 WYBC's Banesha B and Jessica Carl will be on hand as well. All children should bring their own bags. 40 Boards Doubles Tournament
Every Weekend starting April 10th through April 25th

For three consecutive weekends starting Saturday April 10th through Sunday April 25th the 40 Boards Doubles Tournament will take place at Wallingford Bowl in Wallingford from 12:00 to 6:00 PM. This tournament is open to all USBC sanctioned bowlers. Proceeds to benefit the Van Spruill Sr. Scholarship Fund, which is open to all graduating seniors from Hillhouse High School. The Benefit for Gary Mortimer Ziti Dinner will take place on Sunday April 11th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM at The Foxon Firehouse located on Route 80 in East Haven. Gary was diagnosed with non-operable stage 4 lung cancer. He is the loving father of two young daughters, 7 and 11. Help raise money and lessen the burden of the many medical bills incurred during his courageous battle to beat this horrific disease. A donation of $25 is greatly needed and appreciated. Sight and Sound is presenting a Bus Trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to see the Biblical play "Joseph" on Saturday April 17th. Bus will leave from Faith Center Church located on Crown Street in Meriden, Connecticut at 6:30 AM. The bus will leave Lancaster, Pennsylvania at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $125 for adults; $100 for Children 13-18 years of age; and $80 for Children 3-12 years of age. Price includes bus transportation to the play and a full buffet. 2nd Annual Sharon Thomas Flag Football Tournament for Cystic Fibrosis
Saturday April 17th

The 2nd Annual Sharon Thomas Flag Football Tournament for Cystic Fibrosis will take place on Saturday April 17th from 10:45 AM to 6:00 PM at Jonathan Law High School Football Field, 20 Lansdale Avenue in Milford. Teams can be made up of males and females, any age and any amount of players. The cost per team is $100. The game will be 7 on 7, and the two teams with the best records at the end of the day will play for the championship. The concession stand will be open all day. There will be cheerleading and a kids play area. Julia's Run For Children 2010 will take place on Sunday April 18th in Downtown New Haven. Registration starts at 7:45 AM; Kids Fun Run starts at 9:30 AM; and 4-mile run starts at 10:00 AM. The race begins and ends at Yale Cross-Campus. Julia’s Run for children is held in the memory of Julia Rusinek, who was a rising senior at Yale University at the time of her death in July 1999. New Haven Home Recovery's Annual Celebration Auction

New Haven Home Recovery will hold its 11th Annual Celebration Auction at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven on Wednesday April 28th. New Haven Home Recovery is a non-profit agency that operates two homeless shelters for single white women and children and 100 units of supportive housing programs for families, including those living with HIV/AIDS. The 23rd Annual St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound Marathon is set for Saturday August 7th. Swimmers are given a maximum of nine hours and 30 minutes to make the 25 kilometer (15.5 mile) trek from West Beach in Port Jefferson, New York across the Long Island Sound to Captain's Cove Seaport in Bridgeport. The money raised from this event will help provide financial assistance to cancer patients and their families as well as cancer screening, prevention and support programs.

The Wintergreen Magnet School International Festival happens on Saturday October 16th at Wintergreen Magnet School, 670 Wintergreen Avenue in Hamden. This special day is to celebrate our communities’ diversity, our students’ heritage and cultures and all of our global citizenry. It's wonderful to watch the school as a community come together to plan and prepare for the International Festival. The hallways and classrooms will be adorned with internationally themed decorations, the mood will be festive and students, teachers, and parents will be ready to come together and celebrate.
