Earthquake on Haiti
Find out how you can help
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 hit off the coast of Haiti. There was serious damage caused such as a hospital collapsing, limited cell phone service and a major bridge collapsing. The organization of Food For the Poor has sent a team down to see what the people need to survive. As of now they are accepting canned meats, fish, condensed milk, evaporated and powder milk and water. Food For the Poor will be doing everything it can to reach out to the people of Haiti and will keep their website posted. Free Diapers from The Community Action Agency
Going on now through September 25th
The Community Action Agency of New Haven (CAANH) is offering free diapers to TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) eligible families. Stop by the CAANH, located at 781 Whalley Avenue in New Haven, to fill out an application for free diapers. After you submit an application you will receive a phone call as to when your diapers will be available for pickup. Applications must be filled out completely in order to be submitted. The Best Buddies Friendship Walk will take place on Saturday October 16th from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at North Haven Middle School, 55 Bailey Road in North Haven. This event is a fun, community walk that raises money for the Best Buddies Program, which promotes friendship and inclusion in middle schools, high schools and colleges across the state. The Best Buddies Friendship Walk includes a 1, 3 or 5 mile walk starting at North Haven Middle School. Both routes will conclude at the Finish Celebration with lunch, awards and entertainment. The Wintergreen Magnet School International Festival happens on Saturday October 16th at Wintergreen Magnet School, 670 Wintergreen Avenue in Hamden. The Bridgeport, Hartford, New London and New Haven Chapters of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. celebrate and honor individuals from each chapter's local community in a bi-annual statewide luncheon on Saturday October 23rd from 12:00 to 4:00 PM at the Inn at Villa Bianca located on Route 34 in Seymour. Honored individuals have a demonstrated commitment to their communities and to education. There will also be a tribute to the Council's founder Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and past president Dr. Dorothy I. Height.
