10 easy things you can do to live an eco-friendly lifestyle. Brought to you by the City of New Haven .

  • #1- Buy eco-friendly cosmetics: Consider the packaging when buying your organic make-up. They're new to the market and few and far between but there are eco-friendly cosmetic companies who recycle. ~ USA Weekend

  • #2 Put your computer to sleep: Did you know that putting your computer in sleep mode will save about a quarter of the energy of what it would otherwise consume? But even the heat your computer generates in sleep mode is one of the reasons your computer breaks down so just turn off your computer. ~ Berkeley Lab

  • #3 Not everyone can afford a hybrid car nowadays so on hot days, keep your windows up– and the air conditioner on– when you're driving on the highway. You use less fuel with the air conditioning on and your windows up then you do with the air off and windows down. ~ Thomas Kostigen, co-author of The Green Book

  • #4 Pet lovers: remember to use biodegradable litter. Clay kitty litter contains carcinogenic crystalline silica and is obtained by open-pit mining. Wheat, pine, or corn-based alternatives are much more eco-friendly and can even be recycled as mulch. ~Wendy Gordon, of National Geographic's The Green Guide

  • #5 Use a canvas or hemp leash and collar: Hemp can thrive without pesticide and since nylon emits nitrous oxide (a greenhouse gas). ~Thomas Kostigen, co-author of the Green Book

  • #6 If your options are local or organic, choose local. The further the distance the organic product the more fuel used. Plus, food shipped is usually picked unripe while local food can stay on the vine longer, which is good for your body.

  • #7 BYOM: Bring your own travel mug to the coffee shop so you won't add to the more than 14 billion paper cups Americans throw out each year. Or if you're in a rush buy Green Mountain Coffee. Green Mountain Coffee cups have a lining made of corn instead of petrochemicals.

  • #8 Get a fridge with a freezer on the bottom: Since cold air settles downward the freezer on the bottom is more efficient... even more efficient than a side-by-side. ~Tom Natan, research director at the National Environmental Trust

  • #9 Jog in eco-friendly running shoes: Look out for eco-friendly shoe companies that are now using recycled products and recycling old shoes into athletic surfaces. ~ USA Weekend

  • #10 Eat local honey: It's important to support our local farmers and eating the honey from our own natural environment can help build a resistance to allergens. ~Thomas Ogren, garden writer
